Greeting the Year with Optimism – Resolutions Without Zika Fear

Dr. Jason James, Chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Baptist Hospital in Miami

It’s a new year; with new positive data and new information. With Zika cases markedly and steadily declining, it’s evident that the combined executed efforts of the government and industry are working. In fact, The World Health Organization recently lifted the Zika emergency.  And in my practice in Miami, 99% of my diverse patients tested were Zika free which indicates that the virus is being controlled.

In addition to practicing medicine in Miami, FL, I share my love for adventure with my family and friends as an avid traveler.  I encourage patients not to let the fear of Zika deter them from living their lives and traveling the world. It is important to separate perception from reality and evaluate the facts when making travel plans. I most recently traveled to Puerto Rico and the Caribbean and can attest that with little effort, it’s easy to be smart and travel freely. Follow CDC guidelines to regularly apply bug spray with DEET, wear long sleeve clothing, and adhere to safe family planning practices – if you’re not pregnant or trying to conceive the risk is minimal. Be smart, consult your physician regarding any concerns and travel plans can be easily enjoyed.
